Outstanding and unique experience. Warm welcome (we arrived early and were able to check in immediately). Good location for exploring Koyasan town. Beautiful surroundings, stunning interior decor in the dining rooms, nice onsen, astonishingly good vegetarian food. The temple master made us feel very welcome at the prayer service and explained everything. Super friendly staff and smiling monks :)

Breakfast and dinner with extra charges are proposed during the check-in. Both were very good and tasteful.
Located in the sacred Koyasan area, Saizenin offers simple accommodation surrounded by mountains and many temples.

The temple is beautiful! The grounds are amazing, the common areas are also wonderful. The rooms are very spacious, having both a "living" area and a "sleeping" area. Note that for the rooms with the shared bathroom there is a curfew for when the shower/bath can be used (4pm-9pm). The morning prayer was also a nice extra to participate in.

Staying here was a fascinating and enjoyable experience. Lovely spacious rooms. Friendly and helpful staff. The food was delicious, the evening meal was (vegan) fine dining.

Fantastic experience! Don't forget to join morning ritual. Don't worry about the food, it is amazing and makes you full even it's vegan / vegetarian. The chef makes wonders. Also everywhere was super clean. Highly recommended.

Room was quite the what I expected. It was spacious and a traditional Japanese room. Washrooms were located bit far from the room and they were public baths. Toilets were located separately which were near to my room. Wash basins for face wash were separately located as well. I attended the morning ceremony. Being a Buddhist myself(Theravada sect) it was different from what I have seen and practiced from my childhood. But was all in for a new experience which was what i got there. Mind that all the shops close around or before 05.30 pm so you have to secure your dinner before that.
The train and cable car were thrilling. The forest surroundings gave the town a cozy feel and kept the air so fresh.. The English Guide Club provided a very knowledgeable guide, Mayumi. I learned much more than what you find in books. The burial site is really amazing - a must see. There are some great coffee shops too. It's worthy of a repeat visit.

This temple is very remote.
This temple is very remote. The area is beautiful and the hiking was great. There is an extra tour option of the cemetery. I thought with the price we were paying that this tour should have been included.

Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one...
Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one day needed - Either pay for the decent hotels and experience the true temple koyasan experience or book a lodging and explore the area. Our expensive (but cheapest temple room) felt super touristy and set up. Food was awful. - Its pretty long to get there from Osaka also.

I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one...
I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one night at any of the temples and also the Okonuin Night Tour is a real must! Apart from one person and the Guide (Nobu) the staff of Eko-in was somewhat arrogant and be prepared for an uncomfortable and short night, but a delicious and huge dinner and breakfast. The sights and nature are stunning and beautiful, really serene and perfect to contrast the buzz of every big City. We bought the digital Heritage Pass and tool the Limited Express Train to Koya, I would recommend! Apart from the Bus from the Cable Car to our Temple we walked to every sight by foot, since they are not far from each other and the whole town is a complex of a „Sight“. The Tokugawa Mausoleum was especially astonishing, since it’s full of Japanese history.
We will absolutely visit Koyasan again, but I would not choose a Templestay again.

Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity.
Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity. So much of our understanding of Japanese Buddhism and Koyasan’s role in its history was informed by the monk who was our guide. We checked out Okunoin Temple and the cemetery the next day, too. It is a very special place.

It is imperative to stay in a temple - the vegetarian meals...
It is imperative to stay in a temple - the vegetarian meals at our temple were delicious and had many courses. The town has so many temples and good hiking opportunities, we could have stayed longer - but my husband was too much of a foreigner to stay in the temple for two nights. The wonderful Okunoin Cemetery and shrine with an ancient forest was a special treat - we spent an entire morning there, and it was a nice surprise that the buddhist monks take their stewardship of the natural environment so seriously that there is even a forestry department of the temple. Other temples were equally awe-inspiring.
Really special stay here. We weren’t expecting it to feel so luxurious. The shower facilities being an onsen bath was a wonderful treat for taking the chill out of the fall air, the food was great and the staff and monks were really lovely. We took part in the meditation and highly recommend it; it was beginner friendly and our monk’s comments and insights were very moving. The location is also very peaceful and right in the heart of Koyasan. Can’t recommend it enough!
A unique experience staying in a Buddhist Temple. It was incredibly comfortable and warm. The food was extraordinary and the atmosphere was beautifully quiet and relaxing. The garden is a lovely spot to enjoy the quietness of Koyasan. This is not a hotel but traditional lodgings. The meals are served at either 5.30 or 6pm and breakfast is at 7.30 am after morning prayers. The food is vegan (which is good by me) and unlike anything I have eaten before, it was delicious!
This is a lovely place to rest comfortably while exploring Mt Koya. I booked last minute and stayed in the large room with private bathroom. I slept very well and the entire premise was very clean. There is dinner on-site and the location is within walking distance of every major sightseeing attraction. The owners were friendly and the food they prepared was delicious with many options to choose from. I will have fond memories of my time at Koyasan, arigato gozaimasu
Beautiful setting and gardens. Very comfortable room. Helpful staff. Delicious, healthy shinjin-ryori. Enjoyed morning and evening meditation. Treated myself to ‘temple shiatsu massage,’ 2 times while there due to a back injury. Takamasa Tsuchiya is a highly skilled practitioner and teacher of shiatsu massage. Between the meditation and massage, I slept so well! Arigatou gozaimashite. 🙏 http://uguisu-koyasan.com/index.html
This property offers a unique experience, staying at a Buddhist Temple. The half board inclusion is Japanese vegan food, reflective of what the priest and monks eat every day. It was well prepared and enjoyable.Although they don’t consume alcohol it can be purchased at a reasonable price during dinner. The spacious accommodation is operated by trainee monks who were very friendly and make us feel most welcome.
We really liked the guest house hachi hachi. The host is extremely nice and gave us great information about the temples and hiking tours. The rooms are large and the mattresses are comfortable. Everything in the house is very well maintained and clean. The bus stop is only 100 meters from the guest house. It is easy to explore Koyasan on foot from the guest house. It is only about 5 minutes to the Famili Mart.
The temple was very nice and in a great location right near the graveyard which is a top tourist attraction in Koyasan. The meditation class was excellent and well explained in English. The morning rituals were also very interesting and great to partake in. The meals were ok. Nothing exceptional, a little disappointing given the price. But overall we had a nice stay.
The monastery was incredibly close to the scenic Okunoin Cemetery and the Danjo Garan temple complex. The monks were extremely friendly, and the temple grounds were extremely scenic. We especially enjoyed the tour of their worship hall after the morning service. Overall, this may be a better experience for Buddhists than the average tourist.
A beautiful Japanese tradition ryokan, with incredibly clean rooms and a gorgeous surrounding area. The staff was incredibly accommodating and welcoming, and brought us dinner and breakfast as well as set up and removed our futons before and after bed time. The additional morning ritual experience added to the enjoyment of our stay.
The charm of koyasan is incredible. I felt very comfortable at the temple. The monks are very young and kind. The food is copious and delicious. I really liked the breakfast too. Some of the monks speak English, which can be useful. Small plus for the onsen. Very well located in relation to other temples and the cemetery.
The accommodation is great for tourists looking for an authentic Koyasan experience. The lodge is a traditional japanese complex, the room is spacious and included tatami, futon and yukata and there are also two hot tubs, one for men and one for women. Finally, be sure not to miss the two morning ceremonies with the monks
Great temple stay experience. Food was very good and well presented. Central location to visit some of the popular sites around Koyasan. Met the son of the owner of the establishment on our way out and he was very generous and pleasant gentleman.
Beautiful space, lovely staff supporting the temple and shukubo. Very clean. Great location in Koyasan. Beautiful vegan meal at breakfast and dinner, tea and snacks provided in your room. Such a unique experience. As they note, it’s not a hotel.
Sleeping a night in a buddhist temple is an incredjble experience. Koyasan is a very special place in Japan, making it worth to stay overnight here. The rooms were spatious and the bathroom was clean and confortable. Staff were helpful and nice.
A beautiful and peaceful stay in an authentic Koyasan temple. The staff were all lovely (especially Karen who helped me to check in!) and the food was out of this world. I highly recommend a stay if you need a break from the cities!
Koyasan is the most magical place in Japan and at Rengejoin you can enjoy a once in a lifetime opportunity to sleep in a museum-like place where Michelin star level food is served.
Charm of an old Japanese-style house, but with newly made rooms
Super friendly and helpful owners
Very clean
Izakaya attached to have dinner and a drink after exploring Kōyasan
